The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst

"A marriage in name only...
To save her family home, impulsive bookstore owner, Alexa Maria McKenzie, casts a love spell. But she never planned on conjuring up her best friend's older brother—the powerful man who once shattered her heart. Billionaire Nicholas Ryan doesn’t believe in marriage, but in order to inherit his father’s corporation, he needs a wife and needs one fast. When he discovers his sister’s childhood friend is in dire financial straits, he offers Alexa a bold proposition. A marriage in name only with certain rules: avoid entanglement. Keep things all business. Do not fall in love. The arrangement is only for a year so the rules shouldn’t be that hard to follow, right?
Except fate has a way of upsetting the best-laid plans…" (from Goodreads)

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book quite awhile back from the publisher; however, I did not get a chance to read it until recently. As usual, I was traveling and it was conveniently on my Kindle, so I decided to give it a try.

Glad I did! This was a cute little story. I enjoyed it in the way that I enjoy romantic comedy movies -- you know how it is going to end, but it's still a lot of fun to get there. Both of the main characters had to go through transformation in order to let themselves fall in love with each other, and my favorite part was seeing the Nicholas Ryan arc. The ending? Cutest thing ever!

Lo and behold, The Marriage Bargain was just the first in a series -- I am definitely curious to see how Maggie and Michael's story unfolds in The Marriage Trap!

The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan

I love me some David Levithan. Will Grayson, Will Grayson is one of the best books out there, in my opinion. I loved Every Day, and Dash and Lily's Book of Dares. The Lover's Dictionary follows suit with what I love about David Levithan -- the creativity and uniqueness in his stories. I have been following @loversdiction on Twitter for quite awhile, and I love seeing the periodic posts, which, according to the account profile, "are not from the book, but tease to it."

So I found myself with a flight and a copy The Lover's Dictionary, and I expected to think it was the cutest, neatest thing ever. And it wasn't bad. It IS cute. It IS unique. For those of you who don't know, it's a love story composed of dictionary entries. So it starts with "aberrant" and goes all the way through "zenith," and tells a story throughout.

My only problem with it was that it was too long. I know this is weird to say for a book that is so physically tiny. I do think it's a cute concept, but I could only make it through to "commonplace" before I started to get bored. Perhaps if there was only one entry per letter, I would like it more and really enjoy the concept. But the multiple words per letter make what should be a cute, short novella a little bit too long.

But I'm pretty sure the Twitter account will continue to make me smile.

Book Trailer

Blurb
Gabriel Slade runs Hollywood with his gorgeous blue eyes and egregious temper. No one knows that underneath it all is a man with a frozen heart, cursed to become a beast at every full moon. For seven days he has no choice but to roam the earth as a vicious animal, until he meets a woman who can change it all. Luna Grace has a hatred for everything Gabriel Slade stands for, but she doesn't even know what he looks like. When a chance encounter reveals feelings Luna never knew she harboured, it stands to reason that she would run. Can Luna overcome her hatred and break the curse? Or will Gabriel's temper keep her from realizing her true feelings, dooming him to remain the beast forever?

My Review:
Is it bad that I want to tell you every single part of that book? Oh, how I wish I could?!!!! This is an amazing story!

Best Part:  Hello, Gabriel! I can't believe how much I enjoyed him and his story!  He seriously runs Hollywood!  Everyone knows him and wants to be around him.  Now the book starts out with Gabriel's big party where Luna Grace was also invited to.  Problem is, she has no clue who Gabriel is, but she doesn't like him.  Well, with twist and turns that go through out the whole book (I loved 'em) , you constantly wondering what is going to happen next!!! Oh, I so want to tell you but I can't!! GGGRRR!!

Not so great:  The book is a little slow in the beginning BUT stick with it!! Also, there are still questions that have not been answered (yet).  I am excited to see what book 2 brings!

BOOK REVIEW: Daughter of the Earth and Sky (Daughters of Zeus #2) by Kaitlin Bevis

Goodreads description:

Some vows can never be broken.

Persephone thought she could go back to her normal life after returning from the Underworld. She was wrong.
The goddess Aphrodite is born among the waves with more charm than she can control. Zeus is stalking Persephone and her loved ones, and Thanatos is no longer content with Persephone’s silence.

He wants her soul.

Persephone can’t tell anyone about Thanatos’ betrayal, and it drives a wedge between her and Hades. Her mother is still keeping secrets, and Melissa’s jealousy of Aphrodite threatens to tear their friendship apart.
Alone, Persephone turns to a human boy for comfort. But will their relationship put him in danger?
Sacrifices must be made, and Persephone must choose between her human life and her responsibilities as a goddess. If she doesn’t, she could lose them both.
But will either life be worth choosing once Zeus is through with her?

MARY'S REVIEW:

First, I need to thank Kaitlin Bevis for two things.  1) Thank you for the book 2) thank you for Hades (ya, never thought I would say that I am in love with Hades)

Second, I need to calm down before I write this review because I am still reeling from the book.  OMG!  I thought book 1: Persephone was good, but this was WAY BETTER!

Lastly, OMG!!! I need book 3 so badly .... and I have to wait............ *hangs head*

Best part of the book:  Ok, I am just going to say it .. *clears throat* Hello.  My name is Mary and I am in love with Hades.  *phew* glad I got that out of the way. Now onto the review!!

I need to say this, Kaitlin Bevis knows how to write!! Let me explain, I am a HUGE Greek-Geek.  I have loved Greek Mythology most of my life.  I have never (not one time, ever) thought of loving Hades.  He is the God of the Underworld, why love him? Kaitlin puts him in a whole different light and in this book I just love him more!

At the end of Book 1 Persephone was heading back to her mother's realm, to go back to school and be normal.  Well, that didn't really happen!  She made a promise to Thanatos and Hades can't quite figure it out.  There were at times in this book that I just wanted to grab Persephone and hug her.  When you read this book you forget that she is still so young and just needs friends/family to help her.

Then there Hades.  He seems to always be on the verge of telling Persephone his feelings but stops every time. (that kills me).  He wants to protect her too from her father, Zeus, and he can't because she keeps pulling away.  Oh, Hades.

Not so great about book:  The one (and only) thing that is wrong with this book is that there is another cliffhanger and I do not have book 3. *hangs head* I am so impatient ........

If you want to purchase Book 1: Persephone (and you really really should) you can here:

A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean

Like a large majority of modern females, I went through a phase where I was obsessed with Brad Pitt. Mine happened in the early to mid-90s, during the Legends of the Fall, Interview with the Vampire, and A River Runs Through It era. So, I have seen this movie, but a) I don't remember much about it and b) I've never read the book.

A River Runs Through It is actually a novella which either stands alone or is part of the larger book A River Runs Through It and Other Stories. I was supposed to pick up the latter and somehow ended up with just the former. In a nutshell, A River Runs Through It is a mostly autobiographical account of two things: 1) Norman's brother Paul; and 2) fly fishing. I listened to an interview with Norman in which I learned that he thought the book was firstly about Paul and secondly about fly fishing. I must admit, I did not see it that way. To me, the book was about fly fishing first and Paul second.

This was the pro and con of this book. The writing is beautiful. Simply amazing. Some of the smoothest and most vivid writing I have had the pleasure of encountering in awhile. It is like a nice melody; and yes, it is like a river. It flows so smoothly, but also with character. It is obvious in the writing that Norman loves fly fishing. He loves it. And when someone gets to share what they love with you in a deep and profound way, in a way that lets you know the whys and hows and the ins and outs of the thing, you have beauty. Hence the lovely prose. But the problem for me, personally? Norman loves fly fishing...I don't. It was a LOT of talk about fishing. On and on and on...about fishing. And it was lovely and I tried to make myself more interested in fishing so I could enjoy it more, but I'm just not that interested in fishing. But I can relate. Have me write a book about traveling or about scrapbooking, and I could only dream of conveying my love for it as beautifully as Norman conveys his love for fly fishing. But, maybe Norman would be bored reading a novella about scrapbooking.

Because of my (non) feelings on fly fishing, I felt the book dragged in places...I wanted to push through because it's so short, but I often found myself thinking, "Are we done yet?" and zoning out for several sentences or even paragraphs where some kind of fishing technique was explaining in great detail. Also, for a story about Paul, it was very disjointed about Paul. I am unclear why he picked to share the certain scenes he did. And there was a large side story about him and his brother-in-law that really felt to me like it had nothing to do with anything at all. If it somehow related to Paul and Paul's relationship with Norman then maaaaybe it would have made sense. But as it was presented, I just thought it random.

By the end of A River Runs Through It, though, I came to appreciate it what it is: a novella. It's not supposed to be the whole story. It's a glimpse into Norman's life and events that shaped him. It is a beautifully written story that relates the nature and lessons of life through one of life's most timeless analogies: a river.

A Beautiful Winner!

CONGRATULATIONS to Amanda Jones who is our Beautiful Creatures poster winner!!

Her life becomes an adventure as she finds herself in the throes of passion one minute and running for her life from a tornado the next. She boldly faces her fears and learns about who she truly is.

Kathy’s life goes from another stepping stone in the circle of poverty to a new revelation that fate has other plan’s for her. She discovers an unbelievable secret- that she is an heiress to a fortune! Kathy learns that once she takes that first step in her life she goes on a whirlwind of adventure that will lead her finally to her soul-mate and reveal who she truly is.

An enduring romance story about love, struggle and eternal hope.

Mary's Review:

I would first like to thank the author for the book for an honest review:

The description/blurb sums this book up very well.  This is a very very fast read! I was surprised that I finished it so fast.  Even though it was a Cinderella Story, there was some parts lacking.  Nonetheless, I enjoyed the story.

Best part of the story:  I enjoyed seeing Kathy Mae blossom from feeling like nothing into being someone.  Kathy Mae worked just a few hours a week at the local library and she discovered a self-help book.  She lived with her aunt because her mother and father (both drug-heads) left her.  She lived a very hard life.  After reading and taking the advice of the book she got a new job and gained some confidence.  Then walks in Mason Wheelwright.  He must have the oddest jobs, that I have read: he raises camels.  Strange, right?! But, it adds to the story!  Well, their relationship blossoms (quickly) and then it just tappers off a bit.  Then there is a tornado that hits the town (hence, the title) and their love resumes.  Then Colette Cabot throws a twist in there that I did not even see coming and then Kathy Mae has to figure out her life all over again!

Not so great about book:  This book is fast paced!  I mean, really fast!  I wish it would have slowed down a bit and been more of Mason and Kathy Mae's relationship.  Kathy Mae went from not being sure of her life, to gaining a lot of confidence in the matter of a chapter!  I liked the author's story and style of writing, but I wish it would have slowed down a bit.

COVER REVEAL: Ink My Heart by Jean Haus

I just love Jean Haus!  She is an outstanding author!  When she asked me to be part of this cover reveal, I almost screamed "YES"!! But, I played it cool and simply said "sure".

I read and LOVED "In The Band" (you can read my review here). Ink My Heart is a spin-off of one of the characters in the book.  Truly, I cannot wait to read this book!

Jean Haus was so kind to give you all a few excerpts from In The Band.  This is what Riley thought of Justin.  Now, Justin will be the main character of Ink My Heart:

~The singer stands with an arm around some girl’s waist and a beer in his other hand while talking to Marcus. This close, I can see that his body matches his face. He’s quite good looking with dark blond hair, deep dimples, and a crooked, white smile. Though he has a shirt on now, tattoos cover his arms and an eyebrow ring catches the light.

~Because Justin doesn’t have a flavor of the month. More like a flavor of the night.

~Justin is a pretty damn good singer.

~As he talks, I’m getting a complete picture of Justin through his body art. He’s not a bad guy. Maybe a bit of a man whore. But he’s just out to have fun. Carefree and cool seem to be his main life goals. And with his obviously rich father, his aimless lifestyle isn’t too hard to maintain.

~Strangely, Justin’s womanizing ways don’t bother me. It’s not like he has a girlfriend, and it’s obvious he’s a player.

~Apparently, his dimples equate to Jedi mind tricks.

I bet you are wondering what Ink My Heart will be about.  Well, how about a book blurb:

Expected Publication: 2013
Even if he weren’t the lead singer of the popular college band, Luminescent Juliet, Justin Noel would have his pick of women. And he does pick. Nightly. Tattooed, blonde, and green eyed, he flashes his dimples and females swoon.
Except for one.
Tattoo artist, Allie Landon, rarely dates, and especially not men like Justin. Though he’s hot enough to melt off permanent ink, she’s done with the bad boy type. But when the ex who broke her heart wants to reunite, desperation has Allie introducing her latest client as her boyfriend. Justin’s more than happy to play the part. He’s completely intrigued by the sexy tattoo artist and college student.
However, Allie’s life isn’t what it seems. There’s little room in it or her shattered and confused heart for Justin. But as Justin remains persistent, ignoring the growing attraction, both physical and emotionally, between them becomes more difficult than tattoo removal.

So, now the cover of Ink My Heart:

What do you think?  Well, I think it is AMAZING!!! Can't wait for the release!!!!!!!!!!

BOOK REVIEW: Dissever (Unbinding fate #1) by Colee Firman

Goodreads Description:

Addison Sanders is used to spending her days in the snow-capped mountains snowboarding and practicing combat at grandfathers centuries old estate. But all that comes to a screeching halt when she wakes up to find the entire estate has been moved to an amazing tropical location, right in the middle of a busy tourist town on the ocean.

After meeting Tanner on the beach one night, everything Addy’s life was built around changes. He’s smart, funny, covered in tattoos, and completely not her type.

Humans shouldn't be able to see into her world, but somehow Tanner can. That makes him dangerous and against her better judgment, Addy can't stay away from him.

At the same time, a guy she grew up with who never gave her a second glance can’t get enough of her. Gage is tall, blond, gorgeous, and not human. He has plenty of girls vying for his attention, so she has no clue what he wants with her. That’s got her pretty suspicious of his motives.

With her grandfather acting as the Overseer for an ancient group of human-like people called Akori, her life is already complicated. But when he dies, things get downright ugly.

As the last living Sanders, Addy is forced to try to claim her grandfather’s position. Instead of inheriting his role as Overseer, a strange Akori symbol appears on her neck. It’s a mark no human should be able to carry.

Addy discovers her family was deceived into serving the Akori for the last 250 years. The mark leads her to a stranger who may turn out to be the key to ending her family’s centuries old burden.

With her grandfather gone and the power and secrets of her family up for grabs, placing her trust in anyone could lead to disaster. Betrayed by old friends and leery of new ones—she’s left to cut through the lies and deception to get to the truth.

Addy discovers that sometimes its better not knowing and misery really does love company in Dissever—Book One of the Unbinding Fate Series.

Also available in the Kindle Store - Bonds are broken and new connections are forged in Sanctify—Book Two of the Unbinding Fate Series.

Mary's review:

I was given this book from the author for an honest review.

Best part of book: WOW!  This is a much different story than others that I have read.  I loved Addy!  She was an amazing character, through and through.  At first, I thought she was just a teenager who just wanted to please everyone, but she was so much more.  She truly cared for her family, friends and her heritage.  On top of that, the "human" Tanner can see her world.  Now, that should be impossible, but he can.  Oh, but I can't forget to talk about Gage.  I think of him as Addy's protector but there is more to it.  Then there is Matt and Kim, friends of Addy and a big part of the story.

Now, I can't spoil everything but there are SOME GREAT twist and turns in this story!  I loved it and the action that came with it.

Not so great about the book:  The ending was a little bit confusing because of what happened, but I am excited to see what book 2 will bring in the adventures of Addy and characters.

Friday Fictional Boyfriend: Mycah Nightly (SPECIAL GUEST POST)

This week is a little bit different!!  I (Mary) normally do the Friday Fictional Boyfriends; however, this week we have a special guest sharing her favorite fictional boyfriend.  My dear friend @Camelot77 is going to tell her about Mycah Nightly.  On top of that, I am hosting a blog tour this week from the book where Mycah hails, Sweet Oblivion by Bailey Ardisone.

So, here is @Camelot77 and "her" Mycah Nightly:

Mycah *swoon & sigh* Nightly, I can never manage to say his name with out a little sigh at the end. Now I'm not going to lie, I have been in love with fictional boys before. Then I met Mycah *sigh* he makes all other boys nonexistent. This is very difficult to try and explain Mycah with just a few words.......sexy, daring, sexy, mysterious, sexy,  passionate, sexy,  brave, sexy, loyal, did I say sexy yet???

First, Mycah saves Nari from her drunken, violent step father. Second, when Nari is thrown into a series of mysterious events, Mycah not only steps in to help Nari, he willingly risks his own life to save here's  Third, Mycah is very mysterious. He never tells Nari where he sneaks off to,  just that he can't stay away from her for long because they're magnetically drawn together. Nari asks Mycah if it's become a habit of his to rescue her all the time. To which replies "I think it's more of an addiction" *squeeeeeeel*  Last, but not least he has a British accent!! Is that not just the icing on the sexy cake that is Mycah????

I fell in love with Mycah from the moment he first saved Nari, but what sealed my fate & made my heart forever Mycah's was when he tells Nari his astonishing secret. All because he  deeply loves he & desperately wants her in his life.

Want more of Mycah? Go grab Bailey Ardisone's Sweet Oblivion.......just remember Mycah is MINE *clears throat & fixes hair* I mean you'll love him too.

You can purchase Mycah....well, the book here:

BLOG TOUR AND GIVEAWAY: Jordyn (A Daemon Hunter Novel #1) by Tiffany King

I almost died when Tiffany King announced this book.  I loved her Saving Angels series so much and to have this spin-off is amazing!  Of course, it does help that I am her #1 fan *wink*!

About the book:

Hand to hand combat training: Check
Cardio and strength training: Check
Daemon hunting: Check
Anomaly: Check

Check, check, check, check...That's all my life is. There's nothing ordinary about me. I'm "special." I know this because I'm reminded of it every stinking day. I can kick a Daemon's ass with both hands tied behind my back. I can run up a mountain without breaking a sweat. Know what I can't do? Get guys to notice me, or hang out with friends like normal people do. I can't just be ordinary because I have an Arch Angel for a mentor who is always breathing down my neck, and a family of angelic Guides and Protectors who scrutinize every little thing I do. Just for a day I want a life where I'm no longer some anomaly, where I don't have to feel like a lab rat.

And then I met Emrys. Okay, so my mentor and family hate him, but probably for good reason. After-all, he is a Soul Trader, and they aren't the most trust worthy beings. But, he is sooo hot with his green eyes, leather jacket and the sexiest tattoo you've ever seen running down his back. And-he doesn't treat me like a project.

I've got myself in quite a little quandary here. Choosing between my responsibilities and the Trader that holds my heart is something I didn't sign up for. Torn between two different worlds, I must now decide who to trust and who to walk away from. What's a girl to do? See what I mean? I am an anomaly. I am Jordyn.

My Review:

Where did I begin?! Do I start with the awesomeness of this book?  Do I tell you about the action at every turns of the book?  Or do I tell you the crazy twist and turns of Jordyn's life?  Oh, who am I kidding?? I am going to start with Emrys!!

Best part of the book:  Tiffany brings back all the characters from The Saving Angels series and adds a few more.....YES ..... Emrys!! Oh I was not to sure about him at first because he was a Soul Trader and something seemed "shady" about him.  However, the more the story went on the more I enjoyed the interactions between him and Jordyn!  Empire State Building....need I say more.  I really love the twists that Tiffany King throws into the mix.  Jordyn has one crazy past and it is something that I did not even see coming.  On top of that, as much as I dislike cliffhangers, I enjoyed this one very much!  Very awesome!

Not so great about the book: *hangs head* I love every single book of Tiffany King's.  Wishing for Someday Soon and Miss Me Not are, by far, the greatest books ever written (PERIOD!)  However, there was is one thing that I did not like.  There was a lot a cussing in the book.  Now, I am okay with cussing with a fight scene or a romantic scene but for general conversation, I am not a fan.  So, I skipped a lot of Jordyn's and Embrys' dialogue.  I am so very sorry Tiffany King...I really did love everything else about the book.

BOOK REVIEW: Persephone (Daughters of Zeus #1) by Kaitlin Bevis

Goodreads description:

There are worse things than death, worse people too

The “talk” was bad enough, but how many teens get told that they’re a goddess? When her mom tells her, Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn’t until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. Hades rescues her, and in order to safely bring Persephone to the Underworld he marks her as his bride. But Boreas will stop at nothing to get Persephone. Despite her growing feelings for Hades, Persephone wants to return to the living realm. Persephone must find a way to defeat Boreas and reclaim her life.

Mary's review:

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.  This book had me at Persephone!  I am a HUGE Greek-Myth-Nerd! I have been for years and I LOVED book!!

Best part of book:  This book caught me at page 1! I love Kaitlin Bevis' take on Hades and Persephone.  In this book Persephone is a teenage girl, who has not come into her powers yet.  She doesn't even know that she is a Goddess yet!! But, when she is attacked, Hades comes and saves her and marks her as his bride. I loved that part!  Oh, I just loved how descriptive Kaitlin Bevis was about the Underworld.  On top of that, I LOVED Hades.  Ok, ok maybe you should not love the God of the Underworld, but Kaitlin Bevis put a different perceptive on him and the world itself.  Kind of made me wonder if I was wrong about Hades all these years!  He was more than just a God and his love and compassion for Persephone was unwavering.

Not so great about the book:  I can't really say anything was "no great" about the book.  It held my interest the whole time.  There was action, love and mystery.  There was "dragging" parts that made the story "too much".  I loved all the characters and it was GREAT!

I am so glad I have book 2 in my hands .. right now!

BOOK REVIEW: How It Rolls by Lila Felix

Goodreads description:

Despite the odds, Reed Wolfe is making it, by the skin of her teeth. Her dreams and aspirations will have to wait until she can get on her feet. Because right now she’s homeless and churning on a downward spiral.
Falcon Black is existing. Not living, not thriving, just jutting along a path. But when he finds Reed, he can’t resist the urge to help her, lighten her load. But Falcon tends to go overboard, over the line, crossing boundaries he never thought he would and risking her trust in the process.
Can she accept his love or will it end up smothering her?

Mary's Review

Ok, I am going to tell you all a story.  No, I am not an author but this book has a little bit of special feeling for me.

Several weeks ago, Lila Felix sent me a Facebook message and told she was putting up a blog post.  Well, I got excited because I though "New Book" or "Giveaway" or something exciting.  Well, let me tell you that my heart stopped......YES ACTUALLY STOPPED when I saw this:

You can click on it and read the article.

I teared up and thought "OMG! What did I do?".  I love Lila, very much actually.  She has because a dear friend and I could not figure what I did.  Well, after I read the article and figured out the issue, I signed a breathe of relief! See when I reviewed Lila's book Hoax I stated her books were too short.  I never meant for it to be rude or hurtful but Lila actually took my advice (*insert fan girl scream*) and How It Rolls is 252 pages!! YES!!

Now onto the review:

Best part of the book: WOW! Just ... WOW! I have loved everyone of Lila's book.  Emerge is my favorite, until this one.  How It Rolls is a spin off of Love & Skate, this is actually Falcon's story.  I loved Falcon because he is not what he seems.  He has a mohawk, tattoos and piercings...bet you are thinking "rock band"...WRONG! He is in college and has a way with numbers and money! Faclon's path soon crosses with Reed.  Oh Reed *sniff* I wanted to reach through my Kindle and just hug her.  She has had such a tough life and Falcon cannot seem to get enough of her.  Along with their story we get an extended story of Nellie and Owen.  Of course, Lila through in some twist that made me *gasp* *cry* and *yell* and I loved every word.

Not so great about the book:  Ugh, the ending!  I wanted more! I could not get enough of this story!  Luckily, Lila is doing another spin off for Maddox's story and I hoping that there is more Falcon and Reed in it.  AND  since this one was 252 pages, maybe I could get 275 or even 300!

Have to wait and see!

About the Authors:

Bailey Ardisone is a collaboration between two sisters who were born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois. They combined their creative forces to write the first book in their series, called Sweet Oblivion. Though the name Bailey Ardisone applies to both of them, for the sake of answering questions they will each take on one of the names to make things easier.

Ardisone:

The younger sister of the two in Bailey Ardisone, has always held a strong love for anything art related. Whether it be drawing, music, or constantly day-dreaming, her mind never stops imagining wonderful stories and possibilities. She finally got to put some of those ideas to use with her new found love of writing novels. Some other things she is forever obsessed with are Japanese Anime and Manga, animals, traveling, her home city of Chicago and anything in miniature form. One thing she can never get enough of is sleeping/taking naps and sour skittles.

Bailey:

The older sister of the two in Bailey Ardisone, has always loved getting lost in books, movies, music, and art. Fantasy is her favorite genre. She gets her love of words from their grandmother who together used to write poems, short stories and even greeting cards. Her biggest goal would be to travel and explore the world. She loves going to the beach, enjoys football sundays, and spending time with friends and family.

Shadowhunters and Downworlders edited by Cassandra Clare

Spoiler Alert: May contain spoiler for the Mortal Instruments trilogy. Proceed with caution.

I pretty much love everything that Smart Pop YA does. They're the ones behind The Girl Who Was On Fire, which I simply adored. So when I discovered that they were doing a book about another one of my favorite series, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, I was beyond excited.

A nice collection of essays that covers many different aspects of the series is contained in this collection. Allow me to speak to a few of my favorites ones:

Simon Lewis: Jewish, Vampire Hero by Michelle Hodkin: Okay, part of my love of this essay is simply because I love Michelle. I have had the opportunity to meet her twice and she is just great! I also really did enjoy her book The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. But I think this essay really stuck with me because I am a devoted Catholic. I know it's not Jewish, but my faith is also rich in history and tradition, and I love that Michelle was able to take her faith, which is clearly also very important to her, and relate/apply it in this way. When I was reading The Mortal Instruments, I was able to pick up on some of these ideas, but not all of them, and certainly not with this depth. Also, I love Cassandra Clare's introduction for this essay -- it almost comes off like she is speechless from the awesomeness this essay.

Brotherly Love by Kendare Blake: Because, yes, the brother/sister storyline -- it needed to be addressed. And Kendare did a great job with it! I learned about the Westermarck effect and I see as I'm looking at my book that I actually wrote in the margin by one point: "I never thought of this!" This storyline was definitely an interesting choice by Cassandra Clare and it was nice to read a thoughtful analysis on it.

Immortality and its Discontents by Holly Black and Kelly Link: I like that Cassie and Smart Pop chose to keep this one in an interview/discussion format. This worked so well with this essay because I, as a reader, was able to follow a thought train and see how we got from discussing one thing to something else. Also, the reality of the discussion led them all to get sidetracked sometimes, which was just fun. Kelly makes an interesting point about Magnus: "In terms of audience reaction, his sexual preferences seem much more notable than the fact that he's immortal." Interesting, right?! Good point, Kelly! Oh, and this one, too, which I love:

"...that's a big part of young adult literature, period. It's a literature of discovery and change. You, the protagonist, have to discover the world. And at the same time you have to discover what you are that you didn't know was possible. You are changed. You change the world."

Wow. Bam!

When Laws are Made to Be Broken by Robin Wasserman: I loved reading an analysis of The Clave!

What Does that Deviant Wench Think She's Doing? Or, Shadowhunters Gone Wild by Sarah Rees Brennan: I remember meeting Sarah at the RT convention in Chicago last year. (We had a deep discussion about the merits of being on Team Stefan in The Vampire Diaries.) She entertained me then, and she entertained me with this essay. I was literally laughing out loud and shaking my head and some parts of this one. And putting this one at the end? Nicely played by Cassie and Smart Pop. And this quote here:

"Love is what matters. Love is the song you hear even while you sleep, and you know you are healed, and safe, and where you belong." <3

My random favorite line of the anthology, courtesy of Diana Peterfreund: "See, Jace never learned to flirt properly because he was raised by a murderous sociopath."

If you are a Mortal Instruments fan, I would definitely recommend you picking up a copy of Shadowhunters and Downworlders!

Prodigy by Marie Lu

I love Day. I could pretty much squee over him -- you see this bad line coming -- every day. (Couldn't resist!) So when I saw that my friend Nat over at The Fandom was reading Prodigy, I had to add my "I love Day!!!!" thoughts to her review. With that, she was gracious enough to let me borrow her copy of Prodigy, so I could continue to discover why I love Day. It actually came in handy, as this was the book I brought with me to read over Christmas break, and my flight was delayed THREE HOURS. You know what I was doing! Afterward my family was like, "Your flight was delayed three hours and you didn't call us?!" Yeah...I was a little sidetracked, guys. His name is Day.

But onto the review!

I loved, loved Legend. And would you believe that Prodigy was even better?!?! Me neither, but it was! I loved reading about June and Day's relationship. They both had common doubts about it that you just wished they could sit down and adequately express to each other -- because they were both crazy about each other!

Prodigy starts right where Legend left off, which is nice. June and Day are together, and they are on a mission to find Day's brother. Well, the heart-wrenching part of it is that they are soon on a new mission, which they must complete first -- a mission which requires them to be apart! And while they are apart, there is the new Elector, and there is Tess, and that's all I am going to say about that right now!

I flew through this during my flight delay and I will keep this review spoiler free, but the end -- DESTROYED ME!!! My poor, poor heart. I read it like a month ago and I'm still in pain over it, Marie Lu!!

AMAZING book. If you loved Legend, you'll love Prodigy. If you liked Legend, you'll love Prodigy. If you haven't read either one of these books -- what are you doing?! Go read them now, now, now!!! Just remember...Day is mine :)

BLOG TOUR DOUBLE REVIEW: Pixie Dust by DC Grace

First I need to thank the amazing ladies over at Tsk Tsk What to Read, for this blog tour! Second, I need to warn you there will be a lot of gushing and the word "awesome"!  You have been warned!

This stop is a little different because I am review BOTH of DC Grace's books.

Book 1: Dragon Wings

Book Blurb:

Fiction is about to have a new breed of characters never before featured! The Amethyst Dragon series will introduce you to a whole new brand of creatures, called Dragon Fae. Making their home in Avalon, Dragon Fae are half dragon and half fairy. They are rare creatures, and are the chosen protectors of the fairy realm, as well as humans in the mortal realm. Dragon Fae can take on the form of a dragon, but when in fairy form they do not have wings.

In Book One, Dragon Wings, we meet Dade Blue-Therror, the Amethyst Dragon. He is dubbed this not just for his amethyst eyes, but because he was born of a Blue clan Spring Fairy and a Red clan Summer Dragon. Dade is also Queen Mab's grandson, and heir to the throne of the Seelie Court. When he comes to the earthly realm with his family for his first assignment as Gaia's sentinel, he isn't prepared for what awaits him.

Shelby Mercy, high school junior and popular member of Shelbyville, Kentucky's "in crowd" has everything she ever wanted in life, including the affections of Marshall Townes, Shelby High's beloved football star. But she doesn't have the kind of adventure she reads about in her romance novels. When she literally runs into Dade at his mother's new shop on the Square, she can't get him out of her mind. But Dade isn't interested in getting involved with human girls. He avoids her at all cost, but something about her is hard to resist. The harder he fights it, the farther he falls.

Dragon Wings is a story of everlasting love, passion, fire and fury. Fairy tale meets modern romance in this exciting, thought-provoking story. As battle lines are drawn, darkness and light fight for control. And only one warrior was born to walk both light and dark - the Amethyst Dragon. But who can Dade really trust? The fairies who cannot lie, yet tell creative truths, or the mortals he has always been so suspicious of? Will he save the girl he loves and protect the two realms from the threat posed by the evil Winter Dragon?

The Amethyst Dragon series will take readers on a walk back in time, while still being firmly rooted in present day. In Dade's world, chivalry is not dead, and Avalon still exists on a plane that holds fast to simple truths. Fairy magic is real, Morgan le Fay is real, and with the help of Dade, the Amethyst Dragon, Camelot could rise again. Enjoy the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table? This series is for you! So join us as the tale unfolds, and enter a world that few have glimpsed. Welcome to Avalon, the world of the elusive Dragon Fae. Slip through the gates, and fall in love with the Amethyst Dragon, his best friend Leo, the Sunrise Dragon, and Dade's aunt Tryamon, Keeper of the Forest. There's plenty of room, so bring your silver bough for the Ferryman. And remember, once you're there, you may never want to leave. But remember, with dragons, you can get burned...

My Review:

Oh, where do I begin!

Best Part of the Book: Dade! Yep that says it all!  It took me a a few chapters to figure out was going on because it was very fast paced.  However, once it all started to come together it was AWESOME!  I love how DC Grace writes.  Each chapter is the characters point of view.  I love that because you can see what is going on from all levels.  This is an action packed book!  Dragons, fae, hot guys and (did I say) HOT GUYS!  I love Shelby!  At first she tried to fight the attraction to Dade but .. well, you know!!  However, DC Grace leaves you guessing for more! I was surprised that was a little more "adult" than I originally thought.  No, not THAT Adult but DC Grace is very respectful but its AWESOME!!  DC Grace does an amazing job twisting everything together and you don't feel so lost in these two different worlds!

Not so great about the book:  I never compare authors.  I try to make each about them.  I am making an exception this time.  Rachel Higginson, who is the author of the Star Crossed series, is the only author to make me THROW (yes, throw) my Kindle....until DC Grace!  At the end of this book I was yelling and (almost) tossed my kindle across the room!  The ending of this book KILLED me!!!

Now unto Book 2: Pixie Dust

Book Blurb:

In the shadowy recesses of Orbis Alia, Avalon's darkest realm, the Winter Dragon weaves his intricate, evil spell like a spider web; delicately poised to ensnare his prey once and for all.
Yet somewhere in the land of Tir na nog, Dade Blue-Therror fights back with magic if his own. The crown prince of the Seelie Court will not lose his Chuisle, Shelby, to the madness of his greatest foe.
The battle of good versus evil is about to begin. Father against son, brother against brother.  And for Dademond, the stakes have never been higher.

My Review:

OMG! This book was crazy! (In a good way)

Best part of book:  After the emotional roller from book 1, I didn't think it could be any worse.....WELL, I WAS WRONG!  DC Grace is the greatest part of the book!  She wrote a masterpiece in this.  Just when I thought I had it figured out *BAM* another twist.  I didn't think my emotions could handle it.  OMG!  By the time I got to the end of the book I was a "hot-mess"!  Then after all of that the book ends, on one of the biggest cliffhangers I have read in a long time!  I can't believe this! Now, forgive me for not going more in depth - but I really don't want to spoil it.

Not so great about the book:  UuuuuMmmmm...I don't have book 3 yet! That is what is not great!

BOOK REVIEW: After Eden (Fallen Angels #1) by Katherine Pine

Goodreads description:

Devi knows she shouldn’t trust the new employee at her favorite used bookstore. Sure, he’s funny, smart and hands down the sexiest guy she’s ever met, but something dark lurks behind his unassuming smile and sinful green eyes.

Still, a girl can’t always afford to be picky. When an angel abducts your twin brother it should come as no surprise that the one person who can help you get him back is a demon–and only if you’re willing to pay his price.

MARY'S REVIEW:

I have had this on my Kindle FOREVER and I never got around to it.  However, this year I am trying to clean up my Kindle and read all the books that have been sitting on there forever!

I am not totally sure about this book.  There are parts that I loved and parts I was like "Really?!"

Best part of the book:  I loved Oz and Devi.  I loved how Oz was right there with Devi and try to help her as much as he could along the way.  I love the whole angels/daemons/supernatural story line!  My most favorite thing was that Oz owns a book store *swoon*!  I felt bad for Devi because her father committed suicide and her mother was not really there.  I really enjoyed Kim (Devi's friend).  She was funny and a great addition to Devi's life.

Not so great about the book:  I was deeply confused about Devi's twin brother story line and the guardian angel!  Then Oz "changed" into a female and attended school with Devi (did NOT understand that at all).  Then there was Devi's soul (or lack of thereof) .  I am interested to see what happens in book 2 but at the same time .... maybe not
