Favorite First Sentence

"I've been looking for Sawyer for half a lifetime when I find him standing in front of the Slurpee machine at the 7-Eleven on Federal Highway, gazing through the window at the frozen, neon-bright churning like he's expecting the mysteries of the universe to be revealed to him from inside."
~How to Love, Katie Cotugno

I picked up How to Love on a whim at BEA this year. It was literally the last book I grabbed of the show, and I saw it just laying around on a random table outside of the convention hall. Don't ask me why I grabbed it.

Fast forward to about a week later, and it finds itself sitting on top of a pile of new books I've managed to obtain in the past few weeks. It's a lazy Saturday and for some reason, I grabbed this book off the top of the pile and opened it up. Don't ask me why.

I read that first sentence and didn't come up for air until approximately 150 pages later.

I can't remember the last book I read where the first sentence of it reeled me in so hard. Have any of you ever had that experience? Do you remember the book, and even better, the sentence? I'd love to hear it. You can leave a comment here or tweet @booknerdsblog with the hashtag #FavoriteFirstSentence
