EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Laurie Boyle Crompton, author of Pretty in Punxsutawney

Book Summary
A mashup of Groundhog Day and Pretty in Pink, the book stars a senior who is forced to relive the first day at her new school in an endless loop. Andie is convinced she needs true love's kiss to break the curse, but instead discovers how a high school filled with cliques and misfits can find common ground despite everyone's differences.

Interview with Laurie Boyle Crompton
Tell me about writing Pretty in Punxsutawney. How did you come up with the idea?
I had this idea to write a story about a girl who loved ‘80s movies. I had the character in mind already, and I even pictured her parents. I pictured her being close with her mom, with that feel of Pretty in Pink. The way that Molly Ringwald had her mentor sort of person? I envisioned the mom in that role.

I loved the idea of starting over at a new school, and how difficult that would be. And then I arrived at this character that I already had in mind. I wanted to stretch myself and try writing a person starting each day over and over, and the two married together perfectly.  What could be more difficult to relive over and over than the first day at a new high school?

Can you talk a little bit about the social commentary in the story?
When I’m writing from a particular point of view, I also like to make observations through that character. When I was channeling Andie in particular, [there was] the issue of the eating disorder that Kaiahas. That happens to be an issue that is really near and dear to my heart. It is something that is certainly a problem. A lot of kids wrestle with it, and it continues to be an issue. Andie realized that the girl wasn’t her enemy. They weren’t in competition with each other. The girl on girl aggression? That’s not real, it’s all constructed. She needed to break that down to be rooting for Kaia in that specific space. I did that with intention. I love Kaia and I wanted her to find help and to recognize that she deserves to eat.

What is your favorite ‘80s movie?
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off! The water bottle I carry around says Save Ferris on it. No matter what mood you’re in, it’s like, “Alright, I’m going to go out and seize the day! How much fun can I pack into one day?” It’s silly and over the top, but so many people respond to that because it’s a great, classic, feel-good kind of movie.

Q&A with David R. Gillham, author of ANNELIES: A Novel

Book Summary
The year is 1945, and Anne Frank is sixteen years old. Having survived the concentration camps but lost her mother and sister along the way, she reunites with her father, Pim, in newly liberated Amsterdam. As Anne struggles to overcome the brutality of memory and build a new life for herself, she grapples with heartbreak, grief, and ultimately the freedom of forgiveness. A story of trauma and redemption, ANNELIES honors Anne Frank's legacy as not only a symbol of hope and perseverance but also a complex young woman of great ambition and heart.

Author Interview

ANNELIES is a work of historical fiction that asks the question: What if Anne Frank survived the Holocaust? What sparked your interest in reinventing the life of such a treasured writer?
Anne Frank’s story has always been a story of hope, and hope is the common thread of my writing. Especially under conditions where it’s hard to imagine that such a thing can survive. Probably the most famous passage from Anne’s diary is dated in July of 1944, and in it she writes that, even in the face of war and persecution, she still believes in the basic goodness of people. But the question has been asked, could she still have believed this after experiencing the horrors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen? It is a challenging question, and one, which I wanted to try at least to answer. This novel is my attempt to do so.

How did you approach writing about a Holocaust victim? How are you able to provide validity to Anne’s story?
As I wrote this story, I was constantly aware of the fact that Annelies Marie Frank was a real person, a person who wrote what would one day become an important addition to world literatures. And yet she died tragically as one of millions of unknown faces. In imagining a life for her had she actually survived, I hope to accomplish two things: to give Anne the life she was cheated of and, through telling the story of one girl, to tell the stories of all the “Annes,” thereby underscoring the lost potential of the millions who perished. Anne Frank’s legacy is one of hope, and it is my hope that if I can offer a reminder of what has been lost, we can dedicate ourselves to repairing the world.

How did you set about researching the novel? How did you use your talents as a novelist to imagine Anne’s story?
In writing this book, my priority has been to honor Anne’s story with honesty and accuracy, so I have remained true to the facts, as I understood them. I’ve read deeply, delving into Holocaust histories, biographies of Anne Frank, and her father, “Pim,” memoirs and transcripts of interviews of people who knew her, as well as studying her diary itself. I’ve traveled to the Netherlands twice in researching ANNELIESTo be better educated in the Jewish experience in Amsterdam, I’ve visited the old Jewish Quarter, the former Diamond District, and the Jewish enclave in the Transvaalbuurt, once left in ruins by a freezing population desperate for firewood. And specifically in relation to Anne Frank’s life, I’ve seen the bookshop where she likely picked out her tartan plaid diary, the Jewish Lyceum where she and her sister, Margot, were sent to school during the occupation, and the former Gestapo headquarters where the Franks and their friends were first detained after their arrest. I’ve explored the Frank family apartment in Amsterdam’s Merwedeplein complex. And, of course, I’ve spent hours inside the Anne Frank House itself. I’ve followed Anne Frank’s path from Amsterdam to the remains of the transit camp Westerbork in the northeastern Netherlands, to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where all the inhabitants of the “House Behind” were shipped by the Nazis on September 3, 1944, to Bergen-Belsen inside Germany, where Anne and Margot Frank died of typhus months later. Through study and access to these resources, I have done my level best to portray the historical backdrop against which the Franks lived with authenticity, sincerity, and respect.
The portion of the novel set during the period before the Franks went into hiding fictionalizes a chronicle of events recorded in Anne’s diary, although that timeline has been slightly adapted to accommodate the drama, and the dialogue of the characters largely imagined. The dramatic action of the novel after the return of my character “Anne” from Bergen-Belsen is completely fictional of course, though the background of events against which the action unfolds is based on my research of actual postwar history.

Your last novel, City of Women, was also set in World War II. What attracts you to writing historical fiction, specifically in this time period?
I’ve always been drawn to the past, and consider myself a life-long student of history. I think that history offers many lessons to the present, and that, as a novelist, I am drawn to portraying the parallels. As far as the Second World War is concerned, it seems to me that its sheer scope and tragedy continues to exceed our ability to understand it. So we keep trying. Certainly there have been other brutal and scarring calamities in the length of human history, but few if any have so irrevocably changed the face of the world, and still resonate so widely and deeply. We are living today with the consequences of that war.

One of the most important relationships in the novel is between Anne and her father, Otto “Pim” Frank. How did you develop this father-daughter relationship, both before and after their traumatic experiences?
Dramatically, Anne and Pim represent two different approaches to redemption after trauma. One approach  (Pim’s) refuses to dwell in the tragedies of the past, and looks only toward a better future. The other approach (Anne’s) refuses to relinquish those tragedies, and by facing them, must try to overcome her own anger and guilt. Both paths may to lead to redemption and forgiveness. Both are valid, even when in conflict, because both are fueled, in the end, by the power of hope. Hope is at the heart of ANNELIES.
In developing the fictionalized relationship between my characters of “Anne” and “Pim,” I read biographical and historical works, such as those produced by Mellissa Müller, Carol Anne Lee, and R.W. Jansen. I watched dramatic performances based on Anne’s experiences. I studied accounts of their father/daughter relationship and their personalities left by friends such as Miep Gies. I watched and re-watched postwar film interviews given by Otto Frank, and listened to the stories of the late Cor Suijk, who knew Mr. Frank personally. But really it was Anne Frank herself, in the pages of her diary, who provided me with the contours and depth of their relationship, which I have attempted to portray and upon which I have extrapolated.

Did any other writers inspire you while writing ANNELIES?
I had not actually read Anne Frank’s diary until I read Philip Roth’s novel, The Ghost Writer. In it Roth’s protagonist, Nathan Zuckerman, imagines that a young European woman in her twenties, whom he meets at the home of his mentor, is actually Anne Frank. It’s only a moment’s fantasy really, and Nathan quickly realizes that it’s his willing imagination at work. But it was The Ghost Writer that inspired me to pick up Anne’s diary and read it. I was thunderstruck. Not just by her insight and humor, but by her subtle brilliance as a writer.
Much later on, Cynthia Ozick wrote an article in The New Yorker entitled, “Who Owns Anne Frank?”  It was quite a controversial piece in some ways, but what I recall most was when she asked the reader to consider what important works Anne might have produced had she lived. And that’s when it hit me, hanging onto a strap on the A-train on my way into Brooklyn, that some day I would write a novel about Anne Frank having survived.
And then, of course, there are the many writers who experienced the Holocaust and bore witness, Eli Weisel, Isabella Leitner, Primo Levi, Etty Hillesum (the Dutch writer whose journal and letters were published after her death in Auschwitz.) Also there are the memoires and reminiscences of those who knew Anne Frank personally, such as Hannah Pick-Goslar, Eva Schloss, Nanette Blitz Konig, and Jaqueline van Maarsen. And many, many more survivors, on whose courageous testimony we have come to depend to form our understanding of what cannot be understood.

What do you want people to take away from reading ANNELIES?
That hope can survive. That in the face of all obstacles, in the face of destruction, in the face of despair, hope can abide. In fact, it must abide. That is the message of the book. And that, I think, is what Anne Frank tried to tell us.

BLOG TOUR and AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Taboo Kissess by Gracen Miller

WARNING: This book is for readers 18 and over, contains explicit sexual content, including, but not limited to, m/m, m/f/m, double penetration, anal play, sex-toy play, sex-fruit play, shifter sex, voyeurism, forced seduction, and anything else I might've forgotten to list!

BLURB:

Taboo Kisses…where desires and inhibitions collide.

Dispatched to the mortal realm from Atlantis to seek the source of a brewing rebellion, Sameya is thrown for a tailspin when she discovers her fated mates. As a siren her songs entice mankind and immortals alike to their death. She’s stunned to be seduced by a taboo union with a tiger-shifter and vampyr. Mating the pair could complicate everything and threaten her freedom. Fueled by her duty to Atlantis, Sameya rejects fate’s wisdom and refutes her attraction to the men.

Taboo Kisses…when the forbidden becomes irresistible.

Gabriel and Maximus have been searching for their mate for centuries. Neither expected the siren they were hired to find would deliver more than a lucrative payday. Frustrated
by Sameya’s aversion to their mating, the men anticipate an empty future if she refuses to complete their union. In a rash move Maximus seizes Sameya and holds her captive.

Taboo Kisses…when the siren is serenaded with temptation.

Trapped and at their mercy, Sameya is bombarded with pleasure. Can her mates convince her to take a gamble on their taboo union? With danger lurking in the shadows, will the choice be taken from her?

EXCERPT:

Empress’ delights, she disliked the jumbled way he made her feel. Confused one moment and aroused the next. “What is your name?”

“Call me mate.”

Her breathing died, then escalated. She forced a lame-ass sounding laugh past her lips.

“Don’t get cocky. I’m not into leeches.”

“Don’t disqualify me from the running.” He sidled closer, aligning his body against hers once more, but maintaining space with his palms on the mausoleum on either side of her head. “Not when Gabriel and I haven’t had the gratification of making you come…yet.”

She gasped, her eyes rounding at his foregone conclusion. “Better men than you have tried.”

“None of them were your mates.”

“Wait! Mates? As in plural?” She flattened her hands against his chest to push him away, but forgot to add pressure. The hard contours of his body fascinated her more than was practical. “That’s…insane.” But gods the idea fascinated her. “Sirens don’t partner outside our race and we certainly don’t have more than one partner.”

Sameya didn’t realize she spoke the thought aloud until the vampyr thrust both his hands into her hair. After he had her anchored into position, he shifted closer, widening his stride to fit her pelvis between his legs. His hard-on nestled against her abdomen as he tilted her head back by her hair.

“No more insane than a vampyr mating a shifter.” His mouth landed on hers. He nibbled on her bottom lip, licked the corners and crease. Distracted by the exhilarating sensations, she was unprepared to counteract his move when he placed the pad of his thumb against her chin and tugged, parting her lips for his tongue to thrust inside.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Now, I know that you wrote Taboo Kisses for your husband, do you plan on writing anymore based on the TK characters?

Gracen: I’d plan to write the guy’s witchy friend, Kat’s story, but so far I haven’t been inspired. There are too many other storylines on my plate to get to this one. And I have Road to Hell readers screaming at me wanting the next story in that series. Maybe eventually Kat’s story will get written. I have it somewhat outlined, so it’s just a matter of sitting down and getting to work.

Why did you choose to do paranormal character for this book?

Gracen: Because at the time of writing Taboo Kisses all I wrote was paranormal, so writing outside the genre never crossed my mind.

Are any of the characters mimicked by someone you know?
Gracen: LOL Nope. They’re all spawned from my imagination and photos I found online. I wouldn’t mind having a Maximus or Gabriel in my life though. *wink*

What made you become a writer?

Gracen: My 6th grade English teacher, Mrs. Syler, gave us a homework assignment where we had to write a play. I was distraught by the assignment and sure I’d flunk. I’d never written anything like this before. But when I started crafting the story about Atlantis rising from the ocean to take over the world, I had the best time! We had to share our story with everyone in class and as a group we picked the favorite three to be acted out by classmates. Mine was one of the three picked by the class. I remember being shocked that everyone liked my story, but I was excited too. I’ve been addicted to writing ever since. I wrote stories and poetry all through high school, but didn’t get serious about writing a book until my early thirties.

If you could any genre what would it be?

Gracen: I’d pick the ones I already do…paranormal urban fantasy romance, paranormal erotic romance, and I just recently wrote a contemporary new adult.

Are there new projects that you have planned you can tell us that are coming up?

Gracen: I just finished a new adult romance titled Rockin the Heart. It’s the first story in the Hot Wired series. It’ll be released on January 21, 2014. I’m extremely excited about this book. New adult is a genre that is out of my comfort zone. I wasn’t even interested in writing it, but my best friend harassed me to give the genre a try. When I caved to the idea, the storyline filled my head like the characters had been waiting for me to tell their story. I fell in love with these characters. OMG did I fall in love with them! Since writing “the end”, I have suffered the worst book hangover, worse than any of my other books. I’m also working on the fourth book in the Road to Hell series.

P.S. thanks for every blush in the book and the fact I can’t look at a strawberry the same *wink* *love*

Gracen: Ha! That is the one scene that gets the most comments. I didn’t even plan to write it, but rather those strawberries wrote themselves into the scene. Then I worried it went too far for folks…as if the entire book wasn’t pushing reader’s limits. LOL

BLOG TOUR and INTERVIEW: The Guardians Blog Tour by TM Franklin - More (Book #1) and The Guardians (Book #2)

About MORE

Ava Michaels used to think she was special.

As a child, she fantasized about having magical powers . . . making things happen. But Ava grew up and eventually accepted the fact that her childish dreams were just that, and maybe a normal life wasn't so bad after all.

Now a young college student, Ava meets Caleb Foster, a brilliant and mysterious man who’s supposed to help her pass physics, but in reality has another mission in mind. What he shows Ava challenges her view of the world, shaking it to its very core.

Because Caleb isn't quite what he seems. In fact, he's not entirely human, and he's not the only one.

Together, the duo faces a threat from an ancient race bound to protect humans, but only after protecting their own secrets—secrets they fear Ava may expose. Fighting to survive, Ava soon learns she's not actually normal . . . she's not even just special.

She's a little bit more.

About The Guardians: Book Two in the MORE Trilogy
Coming November 7, 2013
Ava’s life is . . . complicated.
After all, it’s not every day a girl learns she’s not entirely human, or unlocks hidden powers strong enough to make even the First Race sit up and take notice. After surviving an attempted kidnapping and standing up to the Race’s Ruling Council, Ava Michaels returns to college and what she hopes is a normal life. But Ava quickly realizes that for her, normal may not even exist anymore.
In fact, the Council wants her under their control, and they’re not the only ones. The mysterious Rogues have a plan of their own, and it turns out Ava’s a big part of it, whether she wants to be or not.
On top of that, her new relationship is tested in ways she never expected. Her boyfriend, Caleb Foster, has disappeared—accused of betraying the Race—and Ava herself stands implicated in a crime she didn’t commit.
Clearing their names will mean uncovering a web of deceit and intrigue with Ava woven right in the center. To unravel the strands, she joins forces with some unlikely allies; a Protector who once haunted her nightmares, a young girl with secrets as unexpected as Ava’s, and a group of rebel Guardians who have their own fight against the Council.
Together they stand in a battle to find the truth, bring Caleb home, and secure Ava’s freedom—not to mention save her life.

T.M. Franklin started out her career writing non-fiction in a television newsroom. Graduating with a B.A. in Communications specializing in broadcast journalism and production, she worked for nine years as a major market television news producer, and garnered two regional Emmy Awards, before she resigned to be a full-time mom and part-time freelance writer. After writing and unsuccessfully querying a novel that she now admits, “is not that great,” she decided to follow the advice of one of the agents who turned her down—write some more and get better at it. Her first published novel, MORE, was born during National Novel Writing month, a challenge to write a novel in thirty days.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Mike, is mom to two boys, Justin and Ryan, and has an enormous black dog named Rocky who’s always lying nearby while she’s writing. Whether he’s soothed by the clicking of the computer keys or just waiting for someone to rub his belly is up for debate.

In addition to MORE and The Guardians, Franklin penned the Amazon best-selling short story, Window, as well as another short story, A Piece of Cake, which appears in the Romantic Interludes anthology.

THE INTERVIEW

How long have you been writing?

Pretty much all of my life. I used to write stories and poems when I was little, and when I went to college, I studied journalism. I worked for nine years as a TV news producer, so wrote a lot during that time, but all non-fiction. It wasn’t until I left that job that I really tried to write a novel and it was really piecemeal, a little here, a little there. I started writing with a bit more determination in 2008.

What made you write this book?

I’d been writing online fan fiction to kind of hone my skills and explore different kinds of writing, but after a while found it a bit restricting. I wanted to stretch my wings a bit and create my own characters and my own world. I enjoy reading books that have a bit of the supernatural in them, so I knew I wanted to write something like that.
I thought about when you’re a kid, and you think, “Hey, I bet I could fly if I just tried hard enough.” Am I the only kid who fantasized about that kind of thing? Being able to move things with your mind, or turn invisible? Well, then I wondered, what if you were right? What if you could do amazing things like that and you just didn’t know it? That led to some other What Ifs – What if the Titans and the Nephilim and other creatures of legend weren’t a myth after all? What if they’re still around, but they stay out of sight unless they perceive someone as a threat? What if they find a girl with unusual abilities and see her as one of those threats?
All of that kind of swam around in my head for a while, until it eventually became MORE.

Who is your favorite character to write from your book?

In MORE, it was Ava. I loved getting to know her and seeing her evolve. She is a strong person, but not over-confident, and she deals with all the craziness life throws at her with a put-on-your-big-girl-panties and get the job done kind of attitude.
In The Guardians, I have to say I really enjoyed writing Tiernan. We don’t see a lot of him in MORE, and what we do see is kind of frightening, but in The Guardians, we learn a little more about what makes him tick, and the scenes with him and Ava were a lot of fun to write. They definitely like to push each other’s buttons.
I also like to write the mysterious bad guy (who has not yet been identified in the books.) It’s fun to get into his devious mind and share little bits and pieces of his evil plan. And a challenge not to expose him for who he is.

What did you love the most about this book?

I enjoyed taking what I learned from MORE and applying it to this book. I did get a bit of criticism from some reviewers that MORE starts off a little slow, and that’s true. I had a lot of back story to introduce and in hindsight, I probably could have done a better job of sprinkling that through the book.
In The Guardians, the back story is already established. We know the characters. So I could focus more on the action. I liked being able to do that, and I hope it means the book is faster-paced and more exciting than MORE.

What do you want your readers to know about this book, if the reader does know anything about this series?

Well, first of all, don’t read The Guardians until you’ve read MORE, because it will COMPLETELY spoil it for you! Beyond that, I’d say The Guardians is about a girl who’s discovering who she really is – and that person is pretty amazing. She also has a bigger part to play in the world than she ever thought possible—a part that could have far-reaching impact and affect even us here in the human world.  Superpowers, romance, adventure, running for your life, and a race to find the truth – that’s The Guardians in a nutshell.

Blog Tour: REVIEW/INTERVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: Under A Painted Sky by Jenna Roads

I am so excited to be part of this tour! Jenna Roads is an amazing author and has become a dear friend.  On my stop, of the tour, I will be doing a quick interview with Jenna and my review of her debut book: Under A Painted Sky

About the Book:

Isabella Reed is a fast-track twenty one year old from a small Florida town. She flees to the Land of Enchantment, Albuquerque, NM, where the beautiful painted skies go on forever and hold hope for a fresh start.
She meets Logan Hayes, a sexy guide who has been hired to show her all the sights of her new city. He shows her much more than that. Something Paranormal happens to Isabella that she is unaware of when touring the Petroglyphs and her life takes a downward spiral into a supernatural captivity that no one will believe except for Logan. He vows to protect her with his life after seeing for himself.

Mary's Review:

Best part of the book: By far Logan is the best part of this book! Isabella is so lucky that her aunt paid for him to "show her around"! I loved the connection between Isabella and Logan! This was a bit of a different story than I normally read. Spirit/Ghost stories are not what I usually read; however, Jenna did a great job of keeping the story going and interesting. I really enjoy seeing the relationship between Logan and Isabella the most!! It was great!!

Not so great about book: It didn't have that "cliffhanger" factor. I thought it was going to lead into a BIG cliffhanger and it really didn't. Now this is not a "bad" thing, but I am interested on where Jenna Roads will "pick up" the next book!

Interview with Jenna Roads

Why did you become an author?
I became an author because I felt I had exciting and original stories to tell.

What is the one thing you enjoy the most as being an author?
I enjoy plot busting as I call it the most. I like closing all the loop holes of impossibilities and making them seem possible. I also like building characters.

How did you come up with the idea of Under a Painted Sky?
I wanted to write something original and different than what is out there now. There is nothing wrong with vampires and werewolves. I love them but I wanted a different paranormal. When I was in New Mexico visiting the Petroglyphs I found out the images made on the rocks were from hundreds of years ago by many different people. I remember thinking wow, there are lots of stories to be told here. I wondered about all of those people and what they would say telling their stories in words and not pictures. The mysteries of the place seemed like the perfect paranormal setting.

Why did you set the story in New Mexico?
It is a gorgeous and mystical place with very rich history and even the place of alien sightings in Roswell, New Mexico.

Did you plan on for the book to be a series or did it just work out that way?
It just worked that way. I guess about half way through the book, I decided I must tell more of the stories with these characters growing and new ones being added.

Author Interview: Diana Nixon

I was introduced to author Diana Nixon when I read her book Love Lines.  I thought it was a wonderful book and shortly after that Diana agreed to do an interview with me.

1: How did you come up with the story line of Christian and Eileen?

- The main purpose of their romance was to show that true love, love at first sight still exists:) I don’t like it when the events of the book develop too slowly. Someone may say that my story goes too fast, but I like the way it goes:) Though despite the fact that Christian and Eileen’s love can be seen from the very first pages, I still gave them some time to understand their feelings for each other, their magical bond and the way this bond affects all the spheres of their lives. It wasn’t all so perfect. There were quarrels, tears and moment of misunderstanding. But there was also love, a very beautiful, passionate love. Everything about my story was built on emotions and the description of my characters’ feelings. I wanted to make the plot unique and I hope I’ve succeeded:) I also wanted my book to be recognized for something special; something that my readers would be looking forward to read more about.

2: According to your website you will be doing 5 books for the Love Lines series, why 5 books?

- This is the first time someone has asked this question :) The Love lines series is dedicated to my beloved husband. We had been dating for almost five years before we got married and every book was supposed to be my present for him for every one of those years:)

3: What do you love most about writing books?

- I like spending time with my imaginary heroes. I can make them cry or I can make them laugh. The books reflect our most sacred dreams and our worst fears. We can face them or run away from them, but we always like the way we do this:) And sometimes writing seems so much easier than talking! What we can’t form into words we can reflect in a book.

4: Do you have any plans for any more books different than Love Lines? (or is it a secret?)

- It’s not a secret:) I have already talked about my future plans. I’m going to write a trilogy about a girl, a guardian angel. Just as is case of my Love lines series, I want to make this new story unique, so much different from all the book of the same kind:) Well, this is as much as I can tell for now:)

5: Are any of your characters based on anyone in your life? If so, then who?

- No. I didn’t copy anyone I know. I have good friends who give me ideas for my characters. I have very good readers, who give me new ideas for the plot. Sometimes they ask questions the answers to which turn into new dialogs for my books:) All my characters are strong and brave individuals. And even if sometimes they feel otherwise, they know what to do to reach their goals and succeed in everything.

Misty is so kind to be helping out with this giveaway.  For our international fans Misty will be giving a eBook of Cornerstone.  If you are US fan that you can receive a paper copy.  All you have to do is leave a comment along with your email. I will pick a winner on May 27th, 2012.

INTERVIEW:

When did you realize that you wanted to be an author?  Always.  In grade school we had to write a little story and the teacher turned it into a book.  I loved it so much, I turned in five of them before she told me to knock it off.  In high school, I had to do a paper that would map a geographical route across the U.S. and there had to be expenditures for gas and food along the way.  I turned what had to be a three page paper into a 40 page adventure.  It’s what I do.

Where your characters, Nalena and Garrett, based off of someone??  Not exactly.  The feelings Nalena has for Garrett, however,  are loosely based on this mad crush I had when I was in 7th grade.   The guy was named Ted and his family would visit his grandparent’s cottage in the summer, just down the street from my house.  He was a little older than me and I hardly knew him, but he was a total hottie and I went to complete idiot bubbles whenever he was around.   So, Nalena and I have that in common.

How did you come up with the storyline of Cornerstone? It was the process of dreaming backward.  I had a dream eons ago and it was one of those dreams that just sticks with you.  I can still remember a lot of the details from it.  It took several years of floating around in the metal computer before I realized it was a book, waiting to be written.  But the dream was the ending of the story, so I had to trace it back to figure out how the dream would’ve come about.  So, that’s where Cornerstone came from.

Can you give us any insight into Keystone? Do you know when it will come out? My cover artist is currently working on the Keystone cover, but I keep pushing back the release date because I’ve got a lot of revisions to do before it’s ready to Sorry for the delays, but things have to be right, you know?  I’m hoping to get it out by the fall, if not earlier>We’re going on a quest in Keystone, so fasten your seatbelts.  You’ll see more of Garrett and Nalena, more of the Reese family and the Addo and there will be lots of new characters that I can’t wait for you to meet.  Cornerstone introduced you to the Ianua community, but Keystone is going to show you how the whole shebang works.

What other projects are you working on, or would like to work on in the future?   I’ve got one story that’s half finished (a dark YA fantasy)  one that is laid out and ready to be written (it’s like The Breakfast Club meets A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and about five more beating on the door.  I’ve learned from Keystone that you really want to push through and get the draft down as quick as you can.  That’s the challenge now- get them down and get them out into the reader’s hands.

INTERVIEW: Jamie McGuire

I was introduced to Jamie McGuire's book Beautiful Disaster from a friend on Twitter.  I was instantly pulled into this amazing story and as soon as I was done I contacted Jaime for an interview.  If you go to her site she has a list of her latest projects, other books that she has worked on, and FAQs.

I would like to thank Jamie for taking time out of her busy day to allow us to interview her.

1.      I saw that on your blog’s FAQs that you are going to be doing a spinoff of Travis’ POV and Travis’ brother, why the spinoff instead of just doing a sequel?

I started Beautiful Disaster while in the middle of the Providence series, so I wrote BD with the specific intent for it to be a stand alone novel. I am not interested in doing another series at this time, because there are so many other books I would like to write, and with a series comes a certain obligation to fans to release books within a reasonable time frame. However, I have some of the best readers in the world, and BD has enjoyed a strong reception.
After saying no to a sequel for four months, a fan suggested I write BD from Travis’ POV, and I thought that sounded like something I could really get behind and have fun with. Writing books for the Maddox brothers would also be something fresh for me to sink my writing chops into, so I agreed to that, as well. However, between Travis’ POV and Trent’s book, I will write at least one different book, possibly two that I’ve kept on hold to finish the Providence series and Travis’ POV.

2.     Did you base Abby and Travis off of someone in your life or did they just come to you as you wrote?

Abby is many facets of many different people. Travis was inspired by a man I went to college with, who I also happened to have a ginormous crush on. Of course Travis is one part fiction, as well, but some of my favorite parts about him come from that college-day crush.

3.    What do you enjoy most about writing?

There are so many things, but I suppose what I like the most is using my imagination to conjure a world and characters that others grow to love, too.

4.      Do you prefer to write books along the lines of your Providence series or Beautiful disaster?

Hmmm...that’s a tough one. I really enjoyed writing BD because it was purely fiction. It wasn’t set in a specific, real life place so I could build that world without research or fear of getting nailed for authenticity. Travis and Abby’s surroundings and experiences were based solely off of my own. I liked breaking the rules in BD and letting the characters go as far as I could take them. I like the darkness of it.

5.    On our site you talk about writing in a journal is that something that you still do and if so does that help keep you thinking straight with all of your ideas for book?

I don’t do it nearly as often as I used to. I just don’t have the time. When I was in school, I wrote every night. As an adult, I changed from paper journals to my computer and I usually wrote when I was going through something difficult. Now if I have a quiet moment, I journal the lives of my characters and call it a book. I’ve even tried to keep up with my pregnancy journal and just haven’t. I must find time to write and market my books, answer mail, keep up with my website, Facebook, family, and friends, along with the responsibilities and paperwork of what is essentially a small business. Journaling for myself has taken a far back seat to the rest of my life, and I believe it’s a fair trade. :)

Again, the Book Nerds would like to thank Jamie for taking time to be interviewed.

INTERVIEW: Jessica Sorensen

I contacted Jessica Sorensen when I began reading the forth installment of The Fallen Star series.  I thoroughly enjoyed this series and I would recommend others to read them also.

As usual, I asked 5 questions because I know how busy authors are.  I would like to THANK Jessica for taking time to answer my questions.

Have you always wanted to be an author?  When did you know this was your passion?

I’ve always loved to write. I can remember being eight-years-old and having a huge obsession with writing stories. The obsession grew the older I got. However, it wasn’t until I started writing my first novel, The Fallen Star, that writing became my passion. It’s when I realized I really REALLY loved to write and that I wanted to be an author more than anything.

With the popularity of vampires / werewolves how did you come up with this unique storyline of the “fallen star”?

The idea for The Fallen Star came from a dream I had about a girl who couldn’t experience emotions. I remember waking up and thinking that it would be an interesting concept to write about. But the idea for the actual fallen star aspect came after a lot of thinking and many revisions.  In fact, the very first draft of The Fallen Star was quite different from what it is now.

Even though the majority of the series is from Gemma’s point of view, how much fun (or challenge) was it writing from Alex’s point of view?

Writing from Alex’s point of view was both fun and a challenge. I was so used to writing from Gemma’s point of view that at first the switch kind of threw me off. But I’m really glad I did it because it gave me the chance to show the readers what was going on in Alex’s head.

Gemma and Alex have really grown up a lot through the series.  What was the best part about these characters from Book 1 to Book 4?

The best part about Gemma is how much she changed. She starts out as a lonely girl with no understanding about emotions and friendship.  Throughout the books, she grows confident and begins to understand her emotions a little better.  She grows into a person that steps up to save everyone she loves, even though it’s hard.
Then there’s Alex. In the beginning of the series, he’s about as confused as Gemma is, but he doesn’t realize it. He’s mean to Gemma, but deep down he really loves her. And that’s my favorite part about him.  He starts off as being kind of a jerk to Gemma, but in the end, his love for her is so strong that he’ll do anything to save her.

On your website you told us that you are writing a new series called The Fallen Soul, can you tell us more about this series and why you decided to do a spin off?

While I was writing The Promise, I found myself getting sad. It wasn’t until I was finished, and in tears, that I realized how sad I was to see the characters go. So after some brainstorming, I came up with the Fallen Soul Series idea, which will have the same characters as the Fallen Star Series, but a different storyline.

And here’s a little description of it:
My name is Gemma Lucas and my life is going good. Alex and I eliminated the star, along with Stephan and the Death Walkers. Finally I can relax and focus on freeing my father from the Room of Forbidden.
At least that’s what I thought. But things are never this easy.
Just when I’ve put the past behind me, Lost Souls cross over into the Real World and start stealing souls for the Queen of the Afterlife.
Then Alex disappears without a trace. As I desperately search for him, I discover secrets I wish I could forget—secrets Alex has been keeping for me. And I’m not sure what to do. Or who I can trust.
